Utility Undergrounding

Seacliff Utilities Undergrounding

By John Horvath

The Seacliff Improvement Association is promoting the undergrounding of PG&E electrical, Comcast cable, and AT&T telephone utilities in Seacliff Village as well as in the surrounding residential areas. Utility undergrounding removes visual blight, preserves property values, and improves the viewscape for residents and visitors. There are also perceived health, safety, and reliability benefits.

Seacliff Village Utility Undergrounding includes about twelve utility poles along State Park Drive from Highway 1 to the ranger kiosk and the alley behind Center Avenue. This project is making steady progress. AT&T is collecting preliminary trench design packages from PG&E and Comcast that they will combine with their own design and put out for bids. Expect visible activity in the coming year. This work is funded by utility ratepayers since beautification of the Seacliff State Beach entrance viewscape benefits the general public.

Seacliff Residential Utility Undergrounding is a significant effort that is many years away. We are now generating a cost estimate that will be incorporated into a well defined, feasible, and fundable project description. This plan will form the basis of future discussions with the California Public Utilities Commission whose role is to preserve the interests of the community and all other ratepayers by balancing undergrounding benefits with fairness of cost.
